It's easy to get the kids to play outside when you've got sidewalk chalk to spare. But when your little ones grow tired of the standard 5-color pack, it's time to DIY your own palette. Just think of the color possibilities: Magenta, rainbow, neon orange...
You'll start by whipping up equal parts plaster of paris and water then adding a dash of powdered tempera paint. (You can use standard tempera paint, but you'll have to reduce the water. If you go this route, I suggest adding the paint to the plaster first, then adding enough water to form a stiff paste.) Then, create a cylindrical mold by lining a cardboard toilet paper roll tube with wax paper. Pour in the plaster mix, let dry and then remove the mold. Ta-da, it's sidewalk chalk!
For smaller hands, I like to use silicon ice cube molds instead of a cardboard tube. Not only does this cut out a step, but the smaller shapes will dry quicker. For complete directions, visit the sidewalk chalk tutorial at the adorable Mini-Eco blog.
