High-Design Hack - DIY Faux Bois Print Fabric

Filed under:

Today we're "hacking" faux bois fabrics, which made the jump from home decor to high fashion runways this year. Here's our inspiration from Stylelist...

Sure, faux bois is a statement look if worn head-to-toe. But the juxtaposition of wood grain on a soft material is refreshingly unexpected and can be adapted to a more down-to-earth use. (I'm thinking of an ottoman upholstered in the material.) Though you can find faux bois fabric, it's actually easy to DIY by making your own stamp, which will give you more control over the pattern. Blogger Ashley Pahl of Indie Pretty Projects shows us how she does it...

Ashley first practiced carving a faux bois design into an eraser, using a linoleum cutter (a carving tool available at craft stores) before carving on a linoleum or rubber printing block. You can also use a linoleum tile.

If you don't want to freehand faux bois, you can print out a photo of wood grain and then rub the back with graphite. Place the photo on top of the eraser or linoleum, then trace over the faux bois design to transfer.

After practicing her faux bois design, Ashley carved it freehand into a rubber printing block. Then, she applied ink and pressed the stamp onto paper. If you're stamping fabric, use a thin coat of fabric paint.

She uses her faux bois-print paper to create these sweet gift tags. You can find them in her etsy shop, Ashley Pahl.
